The county was named after Kentucky Attorney General, state legislator, United States Senator, and United States Attorney General, John Breckinridge. With a population of just over 1100, Cloverport is located on the Ohio River.  Once known as Joesville for its founder Joe Huston, it was founded in 1798, and renamed as Cloverport in 1828 due to the Clover Creek.

Named for Captain William Hardin, Hardinsburg was founded in 1800 as the county seat of Breckinridge. It was incorporated as a city in 1890.  Today Hardinsburg is home to some 2300 residents.
