Brandenburg is the county seat of Meade County with about 2914 residents. Unlike many local communities named after Civil War heroes, Brandenburg was named after a local bar keep and land owner, Soloman Brandenburg. The community grew around a tavern he had opened and a the ferry crossing the Ohio. Historic Brandenburg grew into a dynamic river town with many shops, restaurants and a hotel. Jessie James and his brother Frank were once involved in an "altercation" on the streets of Brandenburg and in 1863 during the Civil War John Hunt Morgan crossed the Ohio River into Indianan at Brandenburg despite cannon fire from a Union gunship.
Today Brandenburg is a community that is growing and vibrant, but still has that small town feel. The schools are some of the best and safest in the state. Youth sports are huge in this area. Meade-Olin Park in Brandenburg seems to grow a little bigger every year with state-of-the-art facilities for baseball, softball and soccer for young and old alike. The four lane Brandenburg By-Pass is filled shops and restaurants. Oh, and the Meade County Fair, the last week in July, is always one of the states best county fairs with rides for kids, food, shows and the best truck and tractor pull you'll find anywhere. It's not unusual for 10,000 to 15,000 people to show up on a Saturday night from a county of only about 28,000 people. Amazing. Brandenburg has that small town feel but is only minutes from the theaters, restaurants and some of the best hospitals East of the Mississippi in Louisville. Nearly 70 % of people who work do so outside the county. The Meade County lifestyle is well worth the short drive.
